Why I Create Dolls

I encountered my first cloth dolls at the International Quilt Festival in 1995. I was hooked, but had no clue where to go to find out more.

I found patterns and attempted the dolls, but was unhappy with the results. Eventually, I found a class offered at IQF taught by Virginia Roberts on needle-sculpting. My skills progressed, but not as quickly as my imagination. I had dolls in my head, and they desperately wanted out.

I've been designing my own dolls since "Hope" was made in 2002. I still have dolls in my head wanting out, but now, the limitation is time instead of skill.

I still, occasionally make dolls from the patterns of other designers - usually because I fall in love with the doll, but sometimes because I want to learn from the designer.

I have some themes that I'm exploring in my dolls. I also participate in several themed challenges each year. My dolls are now organized so that you can see the impetus for the dolls. My personal themes, resulting in series, are now in "Themes". The dolls created for the Stretching Art and Tradition, Treasures of the Gypsy, and EDAC challenges are in "Challenges 1" and "Challenges 2". Dolls created from other designers' patterns are in "Interpretations".
